The surfing life7/6/2023 To be fair, it is easy to romanticize something you love (other guilty parties: food and travel writers). Ignoring the insular texts, the romantic approach of “surfing as _” is not inherently flawed, but suffers when the chosen metaphor becomes a device for the author to avoid the task of translating a unique bodily experience to text worth reading. There are of course, excellent surf writers- Matt Warshaw, John Severson, just about anyone published in the Surfer’s Journal-and an expanding canon of surf literature. Most surf writing is esoteric and insular-only of interest to surfers-or an overly-romanticized take on surfing as nature/lifestyle/religion/etc., or a combination of both. While this is great for surfing itself, it has lukewarm literary consequences. That all of these definitions are more or less true says as much about the way we make sense of our physical experience as it does about the allure of wave riding. It depends on whom you ask, but no one is necessarily wrong. Surfing is: a sport, not a sport, a lifestyle, a religion, a commune with nature, an art, a craft, a science, a transcendental experience, the best natural high. Surfers are a fickle lot: millions of people singularly obsessed with something that has been around for thousands of years, who do not really agree about anything.

The Project Gutenberg eBook, The Social Contract & Discourses, by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Translated by George Douglas Howard Cole. Rousseau is essentially a radical thinker, and in a broad sense a revolutionary. This is because self-preservation is humans’ deepest drive, and. If they choose to remain united with their parents, it is only by agreement, and not by nature. As humans we were `born free' and our subjection to government must be freely accepted. Rousseau contends that the oldest of all societies is that of the family, but once children grow up, they become naturally independent of parents. It argues concisely but eloquently, that the basis of any legitimate society must be the agreement of its members. Censored in its own time, the Social Contract (1762) remains a key source of democratic belief and is one of the classics of political theory.

Through Russell, Travers met William Butler Yeats and other Irish poets who fostered her interest in and knowledge of world mythology. In 1925 while in Ireland, Travers met the poet George William Russell who, as editor of The Irish Statesman, accepted some of her poems for publication. There she dedicated herself to writing under the pen name P. She toured Australia and New Zealand with a Shakespearean touring company before leaving for England in 1924. Travers began to publish her poems while still a teenager and wrote for The Bulletin and Triad while also gaining a reputation as an actress. Her father died when she was seven, and although "epileptic seizure delirium" was given as the cause of death, Travers herself "always believed the underlying cause was sustained, heavy drinking". Jay z decoded review7/5/2023 To bring the creative vision of the campaign to life, Vertigo’s development team made a number of modifications to the Bing Maps API. Users learned to navigate Bing Maps views as they competed to win prizes. Decoded provided contextual geographical and subject-matter content, and Bing Maps provided the surface area in which to experience the game. Visitors answered questions and then navigated through both aerial and StreetSide views to solve clues and discover pages. In order to provide an immersive game experience which would hook the user into a scavenger hunt for over 200 pages, our development partner â Vertigo – leveraged the Bing Maps API and created new ways to customize the Bing Maps experience for the Jay-Z brand.īing Maps was a central grounding element in the Decoded marketing campaign. Last month, Bing concluded the Decode with Jay-Z campaign â a campaign which ambitiously brought every page of Jay-Z’s new book, Decode, into both the real world â on New Orleans rooftops, Miami swimming pools, Manhattan billboards â and into an online contest built on the Bing Maps platform.

Stain by A.G. Howard7/4/2023 I found the dialogue to be self-indulgent, disconnected and the characters to be ridiculous. It was dragged out to the point of pain -a bit like this review. To be fair, I believe that some or many people may enjoy this audio but The plot, characters and storyline was simple yet it managed to get caught up and convoluted. It might come down the fact that it just wasn’t for me. I found myself rolling my eyes and really struggling with the experience. I don’t usually listen to books that annoy me. I really wanted to abandon this book a quarter of the way through but for some strange reason, I decided to see it through to the end. From time-to-time, (rarely) I will decide to not finish an audiobook but I will give fantasy books a little extra time to engage-especially if it requires setting up realms and complicated characters. That said, I committed to listening and finishing Stained. By the time I realized I just really didn’t like the book, it picked up a little. I found getting through this long audio difficult and tedious. Typically, I really enjoy the Fantasy genre and the occasional fairytale-based. |
